Could it be a light for the gauges? I know old Ford’s from that era had a glass cover on the dash so the gauges could get light.

I need one of these for our Mini Cooper. If you’re first at the light, there is no way to see the light in a normal seating position.

Glad those are a thing. We desperately need them in my neck of the woods. You pull to the “stop” line at a red light and you cannot see the overhead lights at all!
